Cyberbullying is a type of bullying that happens online or through text messages. It’s easy for people to say mean things when they’re not face-to-face with the person they’re bullying. Cyberbullying can happen to anyone, but it’s especially hurtful to kids and teens who are already dealing with other issues like fitting in or being popular.

Cyberbullying includes:

  • Sending mean or threatening emails or text messages
  • Spreading rumors online or through text messages
  • Posting mean or hurtful things about someone online purposely excluding someone from an online group
  • Creating a fake online profile to embarrass or hurt someone
  • Pretending to be someone else online to trick someone
  • Posting private or personal information about someone online
  • Cyberbullying is a serious problem because it can make kids feel:
    • Sad
    • Angry
    • Helpless
    • Embarrassed
    • Unsafe
    • Like they don’t belong
    • Lonely
    • Depressed
    • Anxious
    • Afraid
    • Like they can’t do anything right

Some kids who are cyberbullied may start to avoid school, friends, and activities they used to enjoy. Some may even think about harming themselves or taking their own life. If you’re being cyberbullied, it’s important to remember that it’s not your fault and you can do something about it.

Here are some things you can do:

  • Save the messages, emails, and posts. This can be helpful if you decide to report the bullying.
  • Don’t respond to the bully. This can make the situation worse.
  • Block the bully from your email, social media, and phone.
  • Tell a trusted adult, like a parent, teacher, or counselor, about what’s going on.
  • Report the bullying to the website or service where it’s happening.
  • Save the evidence of the bullying. This can be helpful if you decide to report it.
  • Talk to someone who can help, like a trusted adult, friend, or family member.
  • It’s also important to help someone who’s being cyberbullied.

You can do this by:

  • Reaching out to the person who’s being bullied.
  • Let them know they’re not alone and you’re there for them.
  • Encouraging them to tell a trusted adult about what’s going on.
  • Offering to go with them to tell a trusted adult.
  • Helping them block the bully from their email, social media, and phone.
  • Reporting the bullying to the website or service where it’s happening.
  • Saving the evidence of the bullying. This can be helpful if the person being bullied decides to report it.
  • Talking to someone who can help, like a trusted adult, friend, or family member.

Cyberbullying is a serious problem, but there are things you can do to stop it. If you see cyberbullying happening, don’t participate in it and don’t stay silent. Speak up and stand up for the person who’s being bullied. You can also help prevent cyberbullying by being thoughtful about what you post online.
