How to Listen to or Record a Phone’s Surroundings

Ambient listening lets you hear what is happening around a target phone — the conversations in the room, background noise, and anything else within range of the microphone. If you are wondering how to listen to another phone’s surroundings, SPYERA gives you two ways to do it: a simple ambient recording method and a live hidden-call method. You can learn more on the ambient listening feature page.

Two ways to record or listen to a phone’s surroundings

  • Option 1 — Ambient recording (easy, recommended): SPYERA records the surrounding sound and uploads the audio to your web account. This works on both rooted and non-rooted Android devices, and on all iPhone and iPad devices.
  • Option 2 — Hidden phone call (advanced): You place a regular call from a pre-defined monitoring number to the target phone, and SPYERA answers it silently so you can listen live. This works on rooted Android devices, and on iPhone and iPad models that have a SIM card.

Option 1: Ambient voice recording (recommended)

This is the easiest way to capture a phone’s surroundings, and the method we recommend for most users.

  1. Log in to your SPYERA web account.
  2. Click Ambient in the left-hand menu.
  3. Look at the top-left section, where you will see a Record button and a Schedule button.
  4. Click Record to start an ambient recording immediately, or use Schedule to set a recording for later.

Recording starts automatically according to your settings, and the audio files are uploaded to your web account.

Important: Recording ambient audio too frequently creates many large files and drains the battery quickly. Use this feature only in suspicious moments, when you genuinely need it. Because sound files are large, they may appear in your web account later than other, smaller events.

Option 2: Hidden call method (advanced)

Use this method only if you understand how it works. First, you need to register your own phone number as the monitoring number.

How to set the monitoring number

  1. Log in to your web account.
  2. Click Data.
  3. Click Live Listening.
  4. Click Set Monitor Number and enter your own phone number.

Wait for the next connection — your monitor number should then appear in the same section. Once it is set, call the target phone from your pre-defined number. SPYERA answers the call automatically and silently, letting you hear everything around the target phone.

Important notes about the hidden call method:

  • Do not block your Caller ID when calling from your monitor number.
  • Calls placed through a PBX, calling cards, Skype, or other VoIP internet clients usually will not work.
  • Mute the microphone on your monitor phone — or stay completely silent — to avoid detection.

Ambient listening calls are normal network calls to the target that SPYERA answers automatically without ringing or vibrating, without showing any Caller ID, and without leaving any trace in the call logs. Ambient listening works in all countries and on all networks.

Once your audio is uploaded, see how to play recorded calls and ambient files if you have trouble opening them.
